New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton has called for the team to have Michael Thomas’ surgery before June, which would’ve allowed him to participate in OTAs.

The mike thomas saints is the New Orleans Saints’ wide receiver who injured his hip in June. He underwent surgery on August 3rd, and was expected to be sidelined for 6-8 weeks.

METAIRIE, Louisiana — Sean Payton expressed disappointment on Wednesday night that New Orleans Saints receiver Michael Thomas did not undergo ankle surgery until June, but he did not expand on why the operation was postponed.

Thomas, who dealt with the ailment all of last season, is likely to miss some time at the start of this one as well.

“Well, it seems that we’ll have to do without him for a while. It’s disheartening “Before the Saints’ first practice on Thursday, Payton remarked during his first training camp videoconference. “We’ll sort things out with the other players that are present. However, the operation took occur, and we certainly would have preferred it to happen sooner rather than later. And, to be honest, it should’ve been.”

Thomas was scheduled to have surgery in January to repair his torn deltoid and other damaged ligaments in his ankle, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. However, it was only recently discovered that Thomas did not undergo surgery until after the Saints’ required minicamp in June.

Thomas, who was awarded the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year after breaking a league record with 149 receptions, has not commented on the decision to postpone surgery.

“It was agreed after the season that he would treat it cautiously.” And I think we all expected [the ankle] to recover and that he’d be good for camp this year,” Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said on Wednesday. “However, when we arrived to the minicamp, it was clear that something wasn’t quite right. So we had to make the decision, which we did jointly, to undergo the operation in June.

“In retrospect, we would have wanted the operation to take place in February or March. But it wasn’t the case. It is what it is, you know. And hopefully he’s had a nice outcome so far, and we’ll be able to see him sooner rather than later.”

Last season, Thomas sustained the injury in the closing minutes of Week 1 and never completely recovered, missing Weeks 2-8 and Weeks 15-17. In seven regular-season games, he had 40 receptions for 438 yards and didn’t score his first touchdown pass until the playoffs.

Since Thomas’ surgery, the Saints have only signed one experienced receiver: Chris Hogan, a former New England Patriots receiver who temporarily quit football to play professional lacrosse.

Despite the fact that veteran Emmanuel Sanders was dismissed earlier this summer, both Payton and Loomis voiced confidence in their current depth chart at the position. Only fourth-year pro Tre’Quan Smith and third-year pro Chris Hogan have more than 26 career catches for the Saints. This year, they didn’t choose a receiver until the seventh round.

“I believe we enjoy our group of receivers more than some of the media types. But we’ll make the necessary adjustments “Deonte Harris and Lil’Jordan Humphrey are third-year professionals, while Marquez Callaway and Juwan Johnson are second-year pros, according to Loomis.

“There are more urgent positions ahead of that position,” Payton said. He mentioned the outside cornerback position as one that is still a “essential.”
